Pilot Checklist – ANCM

Huh?

What the heck is ANCM = P 4? You see, in aviation, there are a whole bunch of acronyms and memory aids that are used by the pilots and other crew to assist with daily routine items. And this is one of them.

The items are written down in the order of priority. The number 1 item on the list is AVIATE. This is the primary responsibility of the pilot. AVIATE the PLANE. AVIATE includes items like keep the right side up, control the speed, control the altitude etc. Just the basic items needed to keep the aircraft flying the right side up without hitting anything solid. The second item is NAVIGATE the PATH. This is in simple words controlling the trajectory of the projectile, i.e. the aircraft. Once the aircraft is flying the right side up without hitting anything solid, make it go in the direction that will lead to our intended destination. The 3rd item on the list is COMMUNICATE with PEOPLE. Communication is an integral, vital and extremely important part of flying an aircraft. Communicate with your flight crew, cabin crew, ground crew and passengers if necessary.

The 4th item on this list is MANAGE the PARTS. This means, manager fuel consumption, engine parameters, conserve if there is a need, etc.

So, as you can see, a pilot of an aircraft prioritizes his or her workload in the above mentioned simple, but well rehearsed manner, and the ANCM is built into the cockpit habit of a pilot. And I am sure, if you think about it, the ANCM can also be used in many different professional and other aspects of our lives as well. Whenever in an emergency situation, prioritize your workload.
