Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) and General Aviation

by av8er November 4, 2009 » Add the first comment.

The other day I wrote about how the JDPO is working hard to design the future of aviation, and how the NextGen is going to address the issues related to the safety, capacity and efficiency of the national airspace system while providing a flexible, expandable platform to accommodate future air traffic growth. You can read my article on NextGen Air Transportation System by clicking here.

The more I am learning about this, the more I worry about that who is going to fix all these avionics when they break down. There is already an extreme shortage of aviation mechanics, and these guys are not even trained to repair avionics! And to be able to repair avionics, one doesn’t even have to be an aircraft or aviation mechanic.

Whiskey Compass

by av8er October 11, 2009 » Add more comments.

In one of my previous posts I talked about an ol’ pilot rule-of-thumb (we also call them memory aid) called “Whiskey Compass”. This was in relation to Alcohol and Aviation. Most of the newer generation pilots know this rule as “Bottle to Throttle”. Well the rule is 8 hours from bottle to throttle, and you [...] Read more »

I was reading an article about when do you have to report a DUI or DWI related action (in a motor vehicle) to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)? You can read it here. It is true that any arrest, and/or conviction has to be reported to the FAA within 60 days, as required by FAR [...] Read more »

by av8er October 7, 2009 » Add the second comment.

HEARING The term hearing describes the process, function, or power of perceiving sound. Hearing is second only to vision as a physiological sensory mechanism to obtain critical information during the operation of an aircraft. The sense of hearing makes it possible to perceive, process, and identify among the myriad of sounds from the surrounding environment. [...] Read more »

Pilot Checklist – ANCM

by av8er October 5, 2009 » Add the first comment.

Huh? What the heck is ANCM = P 4? You see, in aviation, there are a whole bunch of acronyms and memory aids that are used by the pilots and other crew to assist with daily routine items. And this is one of them. The items are written down in the order of priority. [...] Read more »

Sunglasses for Pilots

by av8er October 4, 2009 » Add more comments.

Sunglasses help safeguard a pilot’s most important sensory asset — vision. A quality pair of sunglasses is essential in the cockpit environment to optimize visual performance. Sunglasses reduce the effects of harsh sunlight, decrease eye fatigue, and protect ocular tissues from exposure to harmful solar radiation. Additionally, they protect the pilot’s eyes from [...] Read more »
